Welcome to the Residency!

What is BSAR?

Located in Bed Stuy Brooklyn, the Bed Stuy Art Residency provides artists with one-month windows for living and working, complete with a stipend to relieve some financial pressure during their stay. The parlor apartment, serving as both living space and studio, is filled with natural light and original brownstone features like original woodwork, decorative fireplaces, and historical lighting fixtures. The adaptable studio area caters to each artist’s needs, fostering creativity and experimentation. Alongside the workspace, the apartment includes a kitchen, a cozy living room for relaxation and reflection, as well as a peaceful bedroom.

Why did we start BSAR?

Bed Stuy Art Residency emerged from our empathy, understanding, and compassion for the challenges artists face in accessing New York City with its high costs and limited space. As a family-run initiative, we bring a personal touch and a sense of community that is often lacking in more formal, institutional settings.  We offer a nurturing, supportive, and inspiring environment to pursue their creative passions while leaving behind the pressures of “real life”!  We recognize that art flourishes when artists have the freedom and stability to concentrate on their craft, and we are committed to providing that opportunity in the city we have called home for the past 20-40 years (respectively)!!

Our Vision

Our vision is to provide a vibrant and dynamic residency program that brings together artists from around the world to experience the rich cultural and artistic heritage of New York City. We aim to create a welcoming and inspiring space that fosters creativity, experimentation, and collaboration, and that reflects the diverse and inclusive nature of our community. Our goal is to empower artists to explore new ideas and techniques, while also providing opportunities to engage with local residents and organizations. Ultimately, we strive to create a global community of artists who positively impact the world by sharing their unique perspectives and experiences.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide a transformative and enriching residency experience for artists from around the world, by creating a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters creativity, experimentation, and collaboration. We are committed to providing our residents with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities they need to expand their artistic practice, connect with local communities, and engage with a global network of creatives. By emphasizing diversity, cultural exchange, and social responsibility, we aim to cultivate a global community of artists who inspire positive change and impact the world through their creative expression.

Inquiries

Thank you for your interest in the Bed Stuy Art Residency. We receive many inquiries from talented artists all over the world, and we appreciate your enthusiasm and support. However, we do not accept applications or cold outreach for our residency program. We encourage you to keep creating and pursuing your artistic goals, and we hope that you will continue to stay connected with us through our website and social media channels.
